There is a time when one needs to consider replacing ice auger blades. Sure, I can sharpen them, but I’m not a miracle worker. If your ice blades have been sitting at the bottom of a pail in the corner of your garage or basement for the past 12 years, before you send them out, take a look and see if the juice is going to be worth the squeeze. If there is flaky, crumbly rust on the edge, either top of bottom of the blade edge (the cutting part), chances are good that they aren’t worth having re-sharpened. If it’s just superficial rust and it looks powdery or dusty orange and is somewhat uniform over the entire blade, those will most likely still be good. But if you have a set of blades and one of them looks like the picture below, recycle them both. That flaky, crumbly rust is hiding a mushy/brittle, non-edge that will be a rough spot on your blade which will not cut ice.
